Minutes of the AWCHA Meeting

West Wind’s stalls at U. S. Nationals. Larry Westmoreland, President, called the meeting to order and
welcomed everyone.
Larry opened the meeting by bringing everyone up to date on the news. He stated that the numbers of
entries in Working Cow Horse classes are way up this year and is pleased that the interest level is so
high. He asked for questions and comments.
Terry Hatfield mentioned that next year is the last year of the $30,000.00 added money and it is
important to keep the numbers up so it doesn’t look like there is a drop-off in interest because the
$30,000.00 added money is not there for next year.
Larry stated that we all wanted to thank the sponsors of the $30,000.00 added money because there
is no way we could have gone this far, this fast, without these sponsors. He also stated that we need
to start finding sponsors now for next year to make up the same money. He stated that we need to get
groups up for the sponsorships rather than relying on one person or entity for $10,000.00.
Moving on to the Reined Cow Horse class at Tulsa next year, Larry stated that he thinks that this class
will be held by first having your dry work and then turn around and get your cow. Eddie Ralston brought
up the question of how will one qualify for this class?
Larry stated that Tulsa will be an improvement for us as the Cow Horse classes will have their own
ring. Eddie stated that Tulsa is very excited to have the Arabian US Nationals.
Larry wrapped up the news and asked for questions from the membership.
Eddie Ralston brought up that he, among others, wants to bring back the cumulative score. There
was some discussion about this, and Larry said they need to take a vote on this at committee meeting
at AHA Convention.
Jim Hitt brought up that this would be an AHA Handbook change and that it would not take effect until
2009..
Larry stated that we would need 2 Go-Rounds and then the Final Go-Round where everyone would
start with a clean slate. Jim Hitt stated that this is what they are doing in Reining.
Larry asked for a Motion from the floor to have 2 Go’s and a Final with a clean slate at US Nationals.
Nancy Brant so moved, and Eddie Ralston seconded. All in favor said “Aye” and the motion was
unanimously passed to take this to Committee and get 2 Go’s and then a “Clean Slate” Final.
Dawn Coons Parker brought up that we would like to have a designated area for Working Cow Horse
contestants where there would be NO LUNGING.
Eddie Ralston mentioned that whether or not martingales were allowed in the Working Cow Horse
Futurity is a question that needs to be clarified. Are martingales allowed or not?
There was discussion had about martingale use in the Futurity, and that this is a problem because the
USEF Steward is not enforcing the rule and perhaps does not know the rule.
Dianna Stanger mentioned that we need a liaison with the US National Show Committee so that the
problem with obtaining cattle at US Nationals which happened this year, does not happen in the future.
Eddie agreed and stated that at Tulsa, someone needs to be appointed by the Working Cow Horse
Assocation and recognized by the US Show Committee, to be responsible to check in the new cattle
when they get there. The representative should be there when they come off the truck and if any are
unacceptable, they can be turned back right then and there.
Larry agreed and appointed Travis Braden and Eddie Ralston to check the cows when they come in
and be responsible for the condition of the cows that are accepted for the Working Cow Horse classes.
Terry said that we need to let the cattle contractor know in advance so that he will pre-check the cows
and that will cut down on the rejects, since the contractor knows we will be checking them when they
get off the truck.
Larry Westmoreland stated that he will tell Mary Jane that Eddie and Travis are the liaisons to the US
Show Committee and that they will have input in matters concerning Working Cow Horse.
Jim Hitt advised that Bill Hughes and Pat Webb also need to be told since they are on the Show
Commission.
Terry also mentioned that we need to have riders on horseback moving the cattle, that cowboys on foot
putting cattle back in the pens does not look professional.
Mark Shroyer suggested that there might be a way to let amateurs push cows back to the cattle pens
to give them a taste of working cows and get them interested.
Larry stated that he wants to get an email newsletter out and asked for everyone’s email address and
the clipboard was passed with all writing down their email addresses.
We had four new Members to sign up at the meeting. They are:
Travis Braden
Kathy Braden
Eddie Ralston
Mike McDaniel.
Caroline Mikulec raised the issue of that we need to use the same cows for Cutting and Working Cow
Horse, with the Cutting using them first. It was agreed that this should be put in the form of a Motion
and Caroline so moved with Nancy Brant seconding.
Jim Hitt suggested that the wording for the Motion should be that the “Working Cow Horse Classes
MAY use cattle PREVIOUSLY used in Cutting Horse Classes”.
This was approved by the Membership and this Motion shall be presented by Larry Westmoreland at
the Working Western Committee Meeting.
No other business being had, the meeting was adjourned.
Respectfully submitted,
Susan Hatfield
Secretary
AWCHA
